Well, what can be said of a brand new band? One that has barely finished recording their debut album and is already being dropped by the likes of Giles Peterson and Benji B (1extra)?... One led by a little known but visionary song writer, whose previous activity has been mainly to contribute to other artists songs?… One which brings together an intriguing mix of sounds and artists. Obviously, we think they are good, very good, but that goes without saying doesn't it….Inhabiting a nostalgic yet utterly original soundscape, ALPHAbEAT takes you on a musical journey through a dreamy post-trip hop fusion of mesmeric beats, quirky ambient electro and haunting jazz. Beautiful songs emerge from lush beds of hypnotic strangeness: imagine David Lynch producing the Carpenters over St Germain/Groove Armada rhythms and this is what the results might sound like. What’s more ALPHAbEAT can count on some very special collaborators:
Nina Miranda
Nina Miranda’s father is Brazilian, her mother is English, she was educated in Brazil, England and France, dreamt of becoming an Opera singer but ended up studying art.. Her seductive vocal style makes you feel like the secret unspoken thoughts of a friend are being whispered in your ear. You will remember her from the seminal Smoke City track "Underwater Love" which was featured on a Levi’s commercial and subsequently made it to the top 5 of the UK sales charts. Since then she has collaborated with the likes of Da Lata, Nittin Sawhney, and most recently Bebel Gilberto.
Pierre Bastien
French composer Pierre Bastien, also known as 'King of the toys', is a faithful John Cage fan who, for the past twenty years, has been producing captivating sound loops with inventions he calls Mecanium. The concept is simple and poetic: to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, violin, etc.) played by mechanical devices made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. On top of these loops and grooves Bastien plays his fragile trumpet compositions, evoking "a forgotten world where tired machines slowly and obstinately repeat coagulated tunes..". Bastien has performed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, MOMA in New York, the Barbican in London at the Rephlex Electronica festival and during Issey Miyake’s fashion shows in Milano.
Diane Charlemagne
"Come to meee....." Everyone (well almost, everyone) knows the classic "Inner City Life" with it's opening string wash and stratospheric vocal courtesy of Diane Charlemagne. Less known is her pedigree in classic r'n'b. Born and raised in the distinctly urban surrounds of Moss Side, Manchester, Diane grew up with a soundtrack provided by "Stevie Wonder, Flora Purim, Marvin Gaye, Return To Forever..." whilst hanging around Ronnie Hubbard's Jazz Band. After collaborating with many of the better know dance and UK Garage names (K-Klass, Satoshi Tomiie, Josh Abrahams to name a few), over the past 18 months Diane has been touring heavily as lead singer in Moby’s live band and has recently contributed vocals to his new album.
