Hailing from the Arctic part of Europe, so far north that it is often missing from weather maps, Mari Boine is one of world music's most intriguing artists: her voice, words, and mesmerising music influential across all musical and geographical borders.

The voice of an oppressed "Sami" minority, in what the rest of the world knows as "Lapland", Mari Boine's rise to international fame, far beyond Scandinavia, was first established with her ground breaking album release "Gula Gula" on Peter Gabriel's Real World label - bringing the artist all-round critical acclaim, and a solid following of listeners spellbound by her powerful voice, story and poetry of both her music, and her often misunderstood "Sami" people.

Ten years on, and several stunning albums later, Mari Boine's songs and evocative arctic soundscapes have also captured the attention of pioneering dj's, producers and remixers from various worldwide scenes of chill-out, house, electronica, world and future-jazzland 2001 sees her finest, precious recorded moments now remixed and released on Norway's leading, outer-limits jazz label, Jazzland.

Illumination's massive "Chilluminati mix" of Mari Boine´s seminal "Gula Gula" opens the proceedings, and has already kicked up a storm in the chill-out world, appearing on the recent Café del Mar (Volumen Ocho). Other highlights include re-workings by well-known and respected names in the world/fusion scenes like Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell, deep-house producer Mark De Clive-Lowe, as well as key-players in the burgeoning Norwegian house/electronica scene: Biosphere, Those Norwegians, and of course, jazz music's new eminence grise Nils Petter Molvær.

Crossing all musical divides and frontiers, Mari Boine's music is forever evolving, and reaching out to new worlwide audiences, and this remix album is both a celebration and recognition of her influence and possibilities - again re-affirming the rare and treasured status and undeniable soul of Mari's voice and "Sami" roots.

So welcome to the phenomenon of Mari Boine! and may these selected remixes serve and honour this dignitary of world music to fresh and familiar listeners alike. After all, "Gula Gula" means "Listen, Listen". Indeed, it´s now time to follow her advice!
