The Funky Lowlives New Single

news from Outer Recordings

UK unsung heroes of organic lounge music, The Funky Lowlives, make their debut appearance for Outer Recordings with their new single ‘Til I left the Music’, released 27 September. The track meanders through toe-tapping rhythms with intricate, ever-building percussion underlined by smooth bass guitar. All of this provides the perfect foundation for Marshmello (a regular at Soul Jazz’z 100% Dynamite Nights) to lay down her sultry vocals. This is the promising first taste of the Lowlives’ forthcoming album, also on Outer, ‘Somewhere Else is Here’.

On the flip, the track gets a bouncy reworking courtesy of Mancunian hip hop supremo Mark Rae. Here, the Northern Soulster injects his characteristic electro-tinged R’n’B flavour turning the original into a cheeky shuffler and moving it from the sofa to discerning dancefloor.

Despite only making waves in the underground here in their native Blighty, Jon Whitehouse and Gary Danks have enjoyed many successes on foreign soil. In 2001, their ‘Inside EP’ single was picked up by and signed to trip-hop heavyweights Kruder and Dorfmeister’s seminal G-Stone label. The lads can be credited with being the only UK artistes to date to release material from K&D’s highly esteemed stable.

Meanwhile, their debut studio album ‘Cartouche’ came out under the German Stereo Deluxe label thanks to a close relationship the guys established with head honcho Oli Roesch. Whilst a beautiful composition and selling in excess of 90,000 , the record’s 2002 release was overshadowed by Oli’s tragic and fatal motorbike crash which was a loss felt by many in the industry not least Jon and Gary.

As well as their own output, the pair have built up an impressive remixography since they met back in ‘98. They have put their skills to work on over 25 releases, producing their own versions of Dizzie Gillespie (on the acclaimed ‘Verve: Remixed’ compilation), Masters at Work and (‘You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’) Mark Rae amongst many others.

The Funky Lowlives are also a sought after billing on the DJ circuit. Performances at the Big Chill Festival as well as on the continent this Summer are testament to the Lowlives’ growing profile. Add to this the fact the guys have been assembling and working with a 6-piece live band for airing both their previous and forthcoming LPs and its easy to see that The Lowlives will soon be in very high demand.
