Hello unto you.
Some news from the cultural chasms of Los Angeles, Gary Todd's
continual and inevitable recovery via hobnobbing with fellow wizards, a
thumb in Cornelius Cardew's eye of the tiger, lamentable death of top
sagacious jazz DJ and other fabled passings....

"Hi all,
As most of you know, Mayor Hahn is seriously about to shutdown the
Cultural Affairs Department in Los Angeles. Could you take a minute to
sign this petition, to save that department, and send it on to at least
five friends? Just paste this address into your server bar and it
should take you there.
http://www.petitiononline.com/SaveCAD/petition.html
Thanks very much...pass it on.

"Greetings to the friends and family of Gary Todd,
Last Thursday evening (3/18) we took Gary to see a performance
featuring English composer Gavin Bryars at the REDCAT theater (part of
the new Disney Concert Hall) in downtown Los Angeles. Gary had recorded
Gavin in England along with Tony Oxley and Derek Bailey for an as yet
unreleased CD which (thanks to Tom Recchion and Bob Floodeen) is in the
works for release on Gary's label the Organ of Corti. It was the first
time we have been allowed to take Gary out for an evening event and a
great time was had by all. The music was beautiful and Gavin Bryars was
very happy to see Gary. Gary had a front-row seat and was literally
filled with joy.
We left the hospital at 7 and stayed until the intermission at about
9:30. At that point Gary started getting sleepy and was ready to return
to the hospital to go to bed. He didn't mind leaving and had a big
smile on his face all the way back. When I called the next morning the
nurse said Gary had been smiling all morning and when I visited him on
Saturday Gary was still energized from his night out.
Hope all is well with you and yours,
Michael Intriere"

"(Re: Cornelius Cardew's "Stockhausen Serves Imperialism") That brings
back memories; back in the late 1970s, Bennett Hogg & I cut a copy and
served it up in performance as "Stockhausen Serves Imperial Mints" as an
antidote to Cardew's bourgeois posturings - in this & other ways did the
Northumbrian scene liberate itself from the manitory middle-class lefty
mechanisms of the rest of the UK so-called free scene which only existed
because of the willingness of the Arts Council to fund such pap. It is
important to remember that Morden Tower came about when Mike Watson
(a.k.a. Outside Bill) & I rejected Arts Council funding to set up a
context for a uniquely working-class music, thus encompassing the
Rupenus / Mylotte / Sedayne axis in all its evident glory. Be seeing
you - Sean Breadin"

"...Roman Sidorov committed suicide on September 23, 2003.
I almost did not know him. Being really strange person indeed, he was
leading a secluded life during the last four years and had lost all
connections with people around. All our dialogue was reduced to several
short letters concerning release of his Staruha Mha project on my label.
I listen to his unique and only official released (to a great regret)
album "Rusali" and catching of on ideas, that now this work sounds
absolutely in another way...And so is the artwork...
The terrible feeling, that all has already been predetermined...
Strange feeling of the formed emptiness....
Goodbye Roman...thank you for your music."

Papal blessing for break-dancers
Monday, January 26, 2004 Posted: 8:32 AM EST (1332 GMT)
"VATICAN CITY (AP) -- In an unusual spectacle at the Vatican, Pope John
Paul II presided over a performance of break-dancers who leaped, flipped
and spun their bodies to beats from a tinny boom box. The 83-year-old
pontiff seemed to approve, waving his hand after each
dancer completed a move, then applauding for the entire group. He
watched the performance from a raised throne.
"For this creative hard work I bless you from my heart," he said.
During Sunday's show, one dancer -- part of a Polish group that helps
poor and marginalized youths -- planted his head on the inlaid marble
floor of the Vatican hall and spun to loud applause from his group and
from Vatican officials. Another performer flung his body around
in a series of spins and handstands.
"Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself
has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but
must develop it," John Paul said.
Earlier Sunday, members of an Italian Catholic youth organization
enthusiastically cheered the pope's weekly remarks in St. Peter's
Square. A few were invited into his papal apartment and helped him
release doves from his window. The pope, who suffers numerous ailments
but appeared relatively strong Sunday, called out to the other children
cheering below his window.
"I love you all. I love you very much," he said."

"Jazz radio host Chuck 'Be-Bop Charlie' Niles dead at 76
VERONICA TORREJON, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, March 16, 2004
(03-16) 00:07 PST LOS ANGELES (AP) --
Chuck "Be-Bop Charlie" Niles, whose velvety baritone voice and music
knowledge earned him the only Hollywood Walk of Fame star awarded to a
jazz radio host, has died. He was 76.
Niles died Monday at Santa Monica Hospital from complications of a
stroke he suffered Feb. 26, said longtime friend Judy Jankowski.
"We would call him 'The Great Chuck Niles,"' said Jankowski, who also is
the president and general manager of KKJZ where Niles served as the
afternoon drive host since 1990. "The great thing about Chuck was that
he lived jazz. He grew up in the jazz era and he knew all the great jazz
musicians." Niles, also known as "Mr. Jazz," and the "Minister of
Cool," was claimed by several local and prominent jazz musicians who
captured his legacy in song titles. The songs included "Niles Blues" by
Louie Bellson, "The Hippest Cat in Hollywood" by Horace Silver and
"Bebop Charlie" by Bob Florence, Jankowski said.
One of the most recognizable jazz radio announcers in the nation, Niles
is credited with making KKJZ one of the top jazz stations in the
country, she said. "We always said Chuck would probably leave us while
on the air," she said. "He loved jazz so much and the stories he told
were just like gifts to everyone. He spoke and it sounded like God
coming down from the mountain."
Born Charles Neidel in Springfield, Mass., in 1928, Niles began playing
clarinet at age 7 and was playing professional jobs on the saxophone by
age 14. He broke into professional radio at WEAT in West Palm Beach,
Fla. He later headed to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Niles, described
as tall and lanky, played a Frankenstein-like character in the movie
"Teenage Zombies" and had small roles in films, including "Breakfast at
Tiffany's."
He eventually ended up as the afternoon movie host at a local Los
Angeles television station and a long-lasting friendship with jazz
legend Sleepy Stein led to him joining KNOB, where Niles launched his
career in jazz radio. After leaving KNOB in 1965, Niles went to KBCA,
which later became KKGO, and stayed there until the station's format
changed from jazz and blues to classical. He then went to KLON radio,
which later became KKJZ.
Niles is survived by his wife Nancy Neidel, and daughter Tracy Neidel."

"Holy Mountain" (Alejandro Jodorowsky) - screening
"Two years after El Topo, Jodorowsky followed that with this even more
surreal effort, which includes some of the most bizarre, grotesque and
extraordinary imagery ever put on to celluloid. It is an astounding
hallucination of a film, never ceasing to bombard the viewer with
phantasmagoric and bravura imagery. The premise of the film, loosely,
is about an alchemist (played by Jodorowsky) who leads his group of
followers towards, and up the Holy Mountain to discover eternal life.
During the film we are told by various Gods what life is like on their
planets, and it is rather distinct and different on each one . Just
watch this picture and let it amaze you with its obscure symbolism, and
its diverse display of outlandish images."

A Festival of Improvised Music for the Benefit of Edith Gutierrez
"Edith Gutierrez has been an inspiration, friend, and mentor to
countless members of Houston's music communities: as a prominent piano
teacher, as a founding member of The Houston Music Teachers Association,
as a composer of children's musicals for Express Theater, and as an
employee at the Houston Ballet. Edith has a special significance to the
Creative Music community. She is the mother of pioneering composer /
performer / humanitarian Pauline Oliveros. Edith, who turned 89 last
November, recently suffered a fracture to her hip (she had a hip
replacement 10 years ago). Edith's recovery has been amazing, but
during that time she acquired more than $7000 in debt due to the costs
of home health care."

screens in the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival on 29 & 30 March,
makes a special appearance at LUX to introduce a programme of her
classic, sexy lesbian shorts from the 1970s and 1980s. These sensual
