[ text about: Sprawl ]

AKIRA RABELAIS (US).
**Composer/software author orginally from South Texas, now based
in Los Angeles.. He made his first musical instrument with metal plates
hit with shots from a bb gun, studied composition, electronic music and
orchestration with Bill Dixon and Joel Chadabe, receiving a masters
at the California Institute of the Arts under tutelage of electronic musician
Morton Subotnick. His most infamous authored piece of software but is
Argeïphontes Lyre, a set of time filters/generators including:Evisceration
Reanimation, Morphological Disintegration and the Lobster Quadrille.
Akira has released albums on Ritornell, Fällt and Orthlorng Musork.
"Simply because he insists on placing individual clarity of vision at the
center of the creative process, rather than be enslaved and driven by
the technological toys and tools of the day,he will always remain a
liberating remove from any definable scene."
Rob Young in The Wire magazine
"Akira Rabelais has wonderfully romantic bone in his body that
affects everything he does, including programming."
Jim Haynes in Aquarius Records Review

LOST WEIGHT (Fin).
**Lost Weight is Finnish-born Jukka Vallisto, solo and with an ever-expanding
group of contributors. First releases were experimental rhythm-based 12s
for Manchester label Paper / Repap, which gathered acclaim from dance music
magazines and DJs like Osymyso and Matthew Herbert. An appearance on
Herbertís acclaimed entry to Tresor's Globus mix series 'Lets All Make
Mistakes' followed.Expanding personal tastes and a degree in Sonic Arts in
London led Jukka to explore more abstracted forms of sound & music. An
example of this direction, the recent release 'Timber Kisses' EP, out on
his own label Half A Map, has been picked up for distribution by A-Musik in
Cologne. Currently the Lost Weight project concentrates on exploring the
harsh / smooth continuum and combining the spectrum of sound shapes and
drones with the more anecdotal domain of vocals and traditional instruments.

HOLKAM (UK).
Simon aka Holkam become a sound obsessive whilst studying
at art school, making sound installations and electro-acoustic
composition. Simn has been working on a public arts project
with Vital Arts at the Royal London Hospital, also recently creating
a sound triptych for an exhibition in Memphis called "life/afterlife",
based on red-shifted cosmic noise and out-of-control radio waves.
Up-coming projects; a release of electronica coming out on Expanding
Records and work on Sub Rosa, working with a moving-image
designer for an installation inspired by JG Ballard‚s
short story Motel Architecture, a drive-in sound art
show and a recording project collecting sound samples
from England's least noise polluted spaces.
