[ review of: s/t by Wechsel Garland (CD Album)
]Remember when you first heard all the classic Rephlex stuff? Remember the chills you got when you heard that lovely crunchy distortion mixed with the light haunting melodies and odd samples? Prepare to feel that way again when you listen to this cd. Thirteen tracks of absolutely stunning melody-infused electro that reminds me of classic Aphex Twin, Kinestheasia and µ-ziq mixed with a little Octagon Man & I-f. It's hard to pick some favorites on this cd because all the tracks are so good but probably the ghosted melodies over light polyrhtyhms of Pineapple Boy, the minimal squelches and vocoder samples of Nervous, and the carnival meets electro sound of Googly Eyes are my favorites. This one will definitely be one of the IDM releases of the year. A must buy for fans of classic Aphex Twin, Kinestheasia and µ-ziq. 10/10

Evil Weevil 12"
[ review of: Evil Weevil 12" by Vendor Refill (CD Album)
]Fresh from the remix appearance on the the recent Mira Calx single, Tom Betts (aka Vendor Refill) release this ep of Skam/MAS-style electronica on Marco Passarani's Nature label. On this five tracker Vendor Refill experiment with lush melodies over deep bass, muted crunchy percussion, and some occasional polyrhythms to come up something not unlike what we've heard from Bola, Gescom or Markant. The final track on this ep is actually a collaboration between Vendor Refill and Disjecta where the two deliver a hauntingly melodic & minimal track that sound very much like Funkstroung. This ep certainly doesn't break any new ground but it does deliver five beautiful pieces of electronica that Skam/MAS fans will really enjoy. We can also expect more good things from Vendor Refill in the near future like an album on Nature and some eps for other well-known IDM labels. 8/10

DJ Screams Medic
[ review of: DJ Screams Medic by Shadow Huntaz (CD Album) ]On this, the sixteenth Plug Research release, the label ventures into the outer realms of hip hop. The players on this one include MC Breath & MC Non (aka Shadow Huntaz) with the lyrical stylings and Trash Aesthetic (aka Mannequin Lung & Low Res) providing the abstract musical accompaniment. There are four tracks on this ep original & bonus beat instrumental versions of two different songs. The first track, DJ Screams Medic, the Huntaz drop their creative lyrics about the heroic struggles of a sperm cell trying to fertilize an egg in a hostile vagina over some funky melodic electronica with Portishead-like melodies over hip hop percussion. On the second side the Huntaz drop more reproductive rap over more excellent funky listening music by Trash Aesthetic. This ep is cool in that because of the rapping, it's not your standard IDM stuff and because of the IDM backing music, it's not your standard hip hop but fans of both genres will really enjoy this one. If you liked the Autechre remix of East Flatbush Project or the Funkstroung remix of the Wu-Tang Clan then you'll definitely want this genre-buster. 8/10
