Clark -

Holding court amidst high expectations from your audience should not phase most artists. Especially not those as gifted and merciless as Chris Clark (AKA Clark).

Having convinced old ears and new with his tech-savvy opus Body Riddle (Warp), all the way back in 2006, Clark embarked on the seldom-straight and narrow road to perfection via a number of cheeky, if informative, raves overseas. The end result is Turning Dragon (Warp, 2008) - a ravenous, winged-beast of a session that ruthlessly feeds on the sweat and cheers of the masses. Upping the tempo and donating the very blood that runs through his fibre-optic veins with this most recent release, Clark proves that he has that rare, reassuring, ability to cater for both ends of the “electrum”. And either end will surely shake hands cordially when they meet halfway during his forthcoming, powerhouse live act. Unstoppable and not to be missed.

Rocketnumbernine -

Setting Rothko aside, in the nicest way possible, Tom & Ben Page again show us what they are made of, with their extra-curricular project Rocketnumbernine. Free-wheeling beats, cybernetic grooves and risk-heavy riffs are the order of the day. The magic of their performance is bound two-fold, first by their improvisation and second their intuition. Testament to this was demonstrated by the inclusion of a double-bass musician at their last show. Plucked strings dripped droplets of sound at perfect intervals, inviting all and sundry to partake in their semi-psychic interaction. Anticipate a showcase of tonal talent and musical immodesty.

Elite Barbarian -

As one quarter of uber-experimentro hipsters Rothko (Trace), and coupled with his recent act of the same quality, Rocketnumbernine, Ben Page (AKA Elite Barbarian (The Front & Follow)) is becoming something of a byword for sonic guidance. His glorious use of a multitude of musical toys for grown-ups lends him qualities of a mad scientist - fearless and inventive.

Those of you yearning for a spot of escapism need look no further. Page bridges the gap between the everyday and the sub-normal, the fancy of his emotionally charged offerings tickled by the whimsy of his creativity. Aural pleasure, and not for the squeamish.
Rough Trade DJs -

With access to the record collection that plastic dreams are made of, it would take a God-and-sunny-Jesus miracle for these guys to be undersold. Vintage post-punk, steady rock and rolling toe-tappers cement the bricks of any line-up. Architecturally sound.

Kelpe + Limn + Elite Barbarian + Rough Trade Djs

[ text about: http://sonomu.net/event/~iiwkyx/ ]

Lithe Presents:
Kelpe – July 29th
+ Elite Barbarian + Limn
£7, 8pm - @The Macbeth, Hoxton St, London.
Purchase tickets through: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/32112

Kelpe -

Also known as Kel Mckeown, Kelpe (DC) is welcomed to London by the open arms of beat-heads and the open minds of progressive melody lovers. Such a marriage of genres gives us, in a nutshell, ballads of technotronic trickery fortified by killer drumming and trapping snares. The bopping of your bonce will allow you to recall, among others, heavyweight electronic icons such as post-drum & bass Bukem. The nodding of Kelpes' own noggin will signify his own, confessed influences - namely early Mo Wax recordings, DJ Shadow and, the icing on the cake, Stars of the Lid.

Yet invention overcomes influence, and that is what makes the Loughborough native shine. Kelpe's leaps and bounds progression, since his first 12" offering in 2003 (The People are Trying to Sleep - DC), is ever-present on his latest gift Ex-Aquarium (DC). Synthesised nods to early rave-era hand-raising are kept in check by 1000-yard stare strings and eclectic, though organised, percussion. Lest we forget the percussion! The support Kelpe receives from Chris Walmsley (AKA All Traps are Set) is like the protein a bodybuilder gets from his nutrient shake. The man is as ubiquitous as his drumming, naming solid acts like Psapp (Domino) and Damo Suzuki (Can) among his previous collaborators. Kelpe and Walmsleys' unity gives the repertoire more balls than Wembley, more muscle than Morecambe Bay. In a word, a sonic infrastructure that cannot be overlooked.

Limn -

With fire in their bellies as well as their instruments, Limn (4th Harmonic) by no means limp to or from any performance. Never before will you see such joyous treatment of raw musical tools, they simply wring value from the materials they have. However, that is as far as their sense of economy goes. The foursome allow a rich apocalypse to permeate the eardrums, guaranteeing an audience that stares on in admiration. Getting down and dirty has never been cleaner.

The High Llamas + Ladywoodsman + Rothko Djs

[ text about: http://sonomu.net/event/~lpmgdw/ ]

Lithe Presents
The High Llamas + Ladywoodsman + Rothko DJ's
4th July 2008 @ The Whitechapel Gallery. £10 - 7pm
To book tickets go to: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/30892

The High Llamas

The High Llamas have written some of the most richly constructed and oddly affecting pop music, combining Brian Wilson-inspired pop fantasias, German electronica, Italian soundtrack music and occasionally drifting toward exotica. One of the most unique sonic innovators The High Llamas are responsible for a series of acclaimed albums from their debut Gideon Gaye through the now-classic Hawaii and Snowbug and most recently Can Cladders. What clearly sets the High Llamas apart is a tendency toward retro-futurism resulting in a self-styled universe created by a unique confluence of string quartets with hi-fi lounge-pop instrumentation (organ, vibraphone, and clarinet).

Ladywoodsman

Ladywoodsman is a London based duo of Duke Garwood and Paul May. Using a mesh instrumentation from guitars, clarinets and percussion to create very raw and moving improvisations. Garwood has been known to come armed solely with a battered £5 charity shop guitar and manage to lay waste to the room with his wonky individual take on the blues. A part-time member of the indie-rock trio Archie Bronson Outfit, Garwood delivers almost trance-like performances which can teeter on the brink of atonal feedback chaos with a shot of raspy vocals and warm pots and pan percussion.
Garwood is the kind of man you envy for his style and talent, he doesn't just play the Blues he is the blues. His maverick, rapid, crab-like style of playing the guitar, as Duke would say "keeps the sound going and the notes ringing", it really is a spectacle that must be seen to believe. Garwood's thick black tar voice is reminiscent of the classic Delta tradition, artists such as Charley Patton, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt, yet he defines his own unique blend of blues, psychedelia, folk and avant-garde rhythms.
Garwood performing live is the best way for his music to be heard. Watching him play is like witnessing an exorcism. You can feel the music creeping out of him when he lays his hands on the guitar, a truly possessed performer.

Ladywoodsman debut album release due to be out soon on Lithe Recordings.

Last but certainly not least, Rothko will be performing a full DJ set thanks to Michael Donnelly, Tom and Ben Page.
