Clark -

Holding court amidst high expectations from your audience should not phase most artists. Especially not those as gifted and merciless as Chris Clark (AKA Clark).

Having convinced old ears and new with his tech-savvy opus Body Riddle (Warp), all the way back in 2006, Clark embarked on the seldom-straight and narrow road to perfection via a number of cheeky, if informative, raves overseas. The end result is Turning Dragon (Warp, 2008) - a ravenous, winged-beast of a session that ruthlessly feeds on the sweat and cheers of the masses. Upping the tempo and donating the very blood that runs through his fibre-optic veins with this most recent release, Clark proves that he has that rare, reassuring, ability to cater for both ends of the “electrum”. And either end will surely shake hands cordially when they meet halfway during his forthcoming, powerhouse live act. Unstoppable and not to be missed.

Rocketnumbernine -

Setting Rothko aside, in the nicest way possible, Tom & Ben Page again show us what they are made of, with their extra-curricular project Rocketnumbernine. Free-wheeling beats, cybernetic grooves and risk-heavy riffs are the order of the day. The magic of their performance is bound two-fold, first by their improvisation and second their intuition. Testament to this was demonstrated by the inclusion of a double-bass musician at their last show. Plucked strings dripped droplets of sound at perfect intervals, inviting all and sundry to partake in their semi-psychic interaction. Anticipate a showcase of tonal talent and musical immodesty.

Elite Barbarian -

As one quarter of uber-experimentro hipsters Rothko (Trace), and coupled with his recent act of the same quality, Rocketnumbernine, Ben Page (AKA Elite Barbarian (The Front & Follow)) is becoming something of a byword for sonic guidance. His glorious use of a multitude of musical toys for grown-ups lends him qualities of a mad scientist - fearless and inventive.

Those of you yearning for a spot of escapism need look no further. Page bridges the gap between the everyday and the sub-normal, the fancy of his emotionally charged offerings tickled by the whimsy of his creativity. Aural pleasure, and not for the squeamish.
Rough Trade DJs -

With access to the record collection that plastic dreams are made of, it would take a God-and-sunny-Jesus miracle for these guys to be undersold. Vintage post-punk, steady rock and rolling toe-tappers cement the bricks of any line-up. Architecturally sound.

Kelpe + Limn + Elite Barbarian + Rough Trade Djs

[ text about: http://sonomu.net/event/~iiwkyx/ ]

Lithe Presents:
Kelpe – July 29th
+ Elite Barbarian + Limn
£7, 8pm - @The Macbeth, Hoxton St, London.
Purchase tickets through: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/32112

Kelpe -

Also known as Kel Mckeown, Kelpe (DC) is welcomed to London by the open arms of beat-heads and the open minds of progressive melody lovers. Such a marriage of genres gives us, in a nutshell, ballads of technotronic trickery fortified by killer drumming and trapping snares. The bopping of your bonce will allow you to recall, among others, heavyweight electronic icons such as post-drum & bass Bukem. The nodding of Kelpes' own noggin will signify his own, confessed influences - namely early Mo Wax recordings, DJ Shadow and, the icing on the cake, Stars of the Lid.

Yet invention overcomes influence, and that is what makes the Loughborough native shine. Kelpe's leaps and bounds progression, since his first 12" offering in 2003 (The People are Trying to Sleep - DC), is ever-present on his latest gift Ex-Aquarium (DC). Synthesised nods to early rave-era hand-raising are kept in check by 1000-yard stare strings and eclectic, though organised, percussion. Lest we forget the percussion! The support Kelpe receives from Chris Walmsley (AKA All Traps are Set) is like the protein a bodybuilder gets from his nutrient shake. The man is as ubiquitous as his drumming, naming solid acts like Psapp (Domino) and Damo Suzuki (Can) among his previous collaborators. Kelpe and Walmsleys' unity gives the repertoire more balls than Wembley, more muscle than Morecambe Bay. In a word, a sonic infrastructure that cannot be overlooked.

Limn -

With fire in their bellies as well as their instruments, Limn (4th Harmonic) by no means limp to or from any performance. Never before will you see such joyous treatment of raw musical tools, they simply wring value from the materials they have. However, that is as far as their sense of economy goes. The foursome allow a rich apocalypse to permeate the eardrums, guaranteeing an audience that stares on in admiration. Getting down and dirty has never been cleaner.

The High Llamas + Ladywoodsman + Rothko Djs

[ text about: http://sonomu.net/event/~lpmgdw/ ]

Lithe Presents
The High Llamas + Ladywoodsman + Rothko DJ's
4th July 2008 @ The Whitechapel Gallery. £10 - 7pm
To book tickets go to: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/30892

The High Llamas

The High Llamas have written some of the most richly constructed and oddly affecting pop music, combining Brian Wilson-inspired pop fantasias, German electronica, Italian soundtrack music and occasionally drifting toward exotica. One of the most unique sonic innovators The High Llamas are responsible for a series of acclaimed albums from their debut Gideon Gaye through the now-classic Hawaii and Snowbug and most recently Can Cladders. What clearly sets the High Llamas apart is a tendency toward retro-futurism resulting in a self-styled universe created by a unique confluence of string quartets with hi-fi lounge-pop instrumentation (organ, vibraphone, and clarinet).
http://www.highllamas.com , http://www.myspace.com/thehighllamassongs

Ladywoodsman

Ladywoodsman is a London based duo of Duke Garwood and Paul May. Using a mesh instrumentation from guitars, clarinets and percussion to create very raw and moving improvisations. Garwood has been known to come armed solely with a battered £5 charity shop guitar and manage to lay waste to the room with his wonky individual take on the blues. A part-time member of the indie-rock trio Archie Bronson Outfit, Garwood delivers almost trance-like performances which can teeter on the brink of atonal feedback chaos with a shot of raspy vocals and warm pots and pan percussion.
Garwood is the kind of man you envy for his style and talent, he doesn't just play the Blues he is the blues. His maverick, rapid, crab-like style of playing the guitar, as Duke would say "keeps the sound going and the notes ringing", it really is a spectacle that must be seen to believe. Garwood's thick black tar voice is reminiscent of the classic Delta tradition, artists such as Charley Patton, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt, yet he defines his own unique blend of blues, psychedelia, folk and avant-garde rhythms.
Garwood performing live is the best way for his music to be heard. Watching him play is like witnessing an exorcism. You can feel the music creeping out of him when he lays his hands on the guitar, a truly possessed performer.

Ladywoodsman debut album release due to be out soon on Lithe Recordings.

Last but certainly not least, Rothko will be performing a full DJ set thanks to Michael Donnelly, Tom and Ben Page.

Tenebrous Liar
Duke Garwood
Mary Hampton
Eoin O"Ruainigh

In the Venue -

Leafcutter John
Leafcutter John (aka John Burton) uses processed instrumental and environmental recordings to create a confident sound that embodies the wisdom and tradition of ancient folklore with the mastery of technology, as if nostalgia was to give birth to evolution. His compositions are a meaningful co-existence of guitar and voice based writing with experimental electronic sonic forms. This unique electro-acoustic folk hybrid has dubbed Burton as one of the most important and exciting composers of the moment.

Burton's interest in audience interaction makes each performance unique, emphasizing the importance of live performances on the development of his music. There are often passages of conversation between the band and Audience as well as improvised songs born out of audience's suggestions.

"Alongside Aphex Twin and Bogdan Raczynski – he's one of the UK's most fearlessly inventive electronicists"…."a striking hybrid of pastoral songcraft, glitch, field recordings and traditional Greek instrumentation that goes far beyond 'folktronica', running the gamut of moods from sweetly mournful to darkly malevolent." - 5 Stars. - Sharon O'Connell/Timeout

"…blend traditional sounds and vocals that cry forth from the ordinary folk long past, with mastery of technology and laptop proficiency. And it's a journey, too, not just an escape from the urban jungle, but a progress of learning, adventure, and discovery." - Luke Turner/PlayLouder.com

"Whoah, this is absolutely great" .... "It's like Leonard Cohen is having a cup of tea with Warp Records in a truck stop outside of Denver." – The Stool Pigeon

Hamilton Yarns
Hamilton Yarns tell tales using cleverly arranged, experimental, pre-rock clunky ramshackle.
Songs are woven together by a fanfare of lost horns, stubby finger picked guitar and a creaking harmonium to form off-kilter folk-pop which
unravel poetic tales made up from half truths and allegories. You may see them perform their tales as a slide show, rhyme story or in puppet form.

"mayhem and mischief which sees the band guide us through their collection of instruments as the clatter and rattle their way through the duration. Occasionally sounding like Islaja and occasionally sounding closer to an Irish folk jam they certainly have a distinct sound..." – boomkat

Dollboy
Dollboy's exploration of ambient sonics with acoustic instrumentation produces a soundscape of 'harmonic convergences' where clarinet, kalimba, glockenspiel, harpsichord, singing bowls, glass glock, space echo recorders and trusty Moog are used to produce complementary sounds exploring a "post-post-industrial urban-folk" sound. Philip Glass style-loops and mellow harmonics build to form lasting eddies in the mind (there's a magic portal quality to be found, like entering Mr Ben's wardrobe).

Oliver has recently returned to remixing and has produced mixes for Tunng, Mighty Math, Animat, Woodcraft Folk and Digitonal. He was also a winner in the recent Penguin ReMixed competition with "Status" featuring the philosophy writer, Alan de Botton.

"A gentle, melodic and delightfully organic selection of Electronica-based tracks that mix it up with guitars and music box sounds to create a Summery, happy and mellow vibe. Truly there are some fairytale moments here." - Small Fish

Woodcraft Folk
Woodcraft Folk carve melody and rhythm from the combination of traditional instrumentation and discreet electronics, forming a very organic sound. Tones are applied with precision to highlight a particular twist in the melody or a slight change of mood. These subtle changes of direction in the compositions constantly renew ones focus as well as the use of a wide range of instruments, such as glockenspiel, xylophone, melodica, stylophone, guitars and bells progressively wrapping layers of sounds around a recurring melodic line.

"A collection of exquisitely rendered pastoral electronica…explores textures and the interplay between folk and electronica." - Wire Magazine

"Woodcraft Folk have proved that homespun charm can have a sharp, cutting edge." – boomkat

Rocketnumbernine
Rocketnumbernine are a London based duo of improvised drums and synths. Formed by brothers Ben and Tom Page in early 2006 their live shows have proved to be powerful and unpredictable. Once described as a cross between The Stooges and Sun Ra, the brothers also members of sonic heavy weights Rothko, deliver a fusion of driving, freewheeling drums, mutilated electronics and pulsing basses. Between them they have played with Delicate Awol, Damo Suzuki, Roger Eno and Peter Bjorn and John and have recently supported the long anticipated Fridge come back gig at Bardens Boudoir.

"So what if you weren't alive to see Can play Munich in '68? Watching Rocketnumbernine perform is the next best thing" - by Do The Du.

Tenebrous Liar
Tenebrous is the recording project of Steve Gullick, better known to the world as one of NME's star photographers. His music is a post-apocalyptic selection of doom and gloom where the willfully lo-fi qualities and Gullick's sparse and deadpan vocals add to the mood. A heavy dose of existential darkness is achieved in Tenebrous Liar music by the distant sound of a harmonica or a lightly strummed acoustic guitar.

"The lo-fi mix of country and blues is often ripped apart by attacks from swirling guitars, buried beneath great swathes of rumbling distortion. This is music likely, perhaps even designed to disorientate and confuse." - Indigo Flow

On the Roof Terrace -

Duke Garwood
Duke Garwood is the kind of man you envy for his style and talent, he doesn't just play the Blues he is the blues.

Mary Hampton
Mary Hampton plays songs that make you realise that you have hairs on the back of your neck. Her voice is mesmerizing and beautifully uncomplicated, sitting proudly within the folk tradition.

"spine-thrilling attic folk" - Time Out London

Eoin O'Ruainigh
Eoin O'Ruainigh is a new talent; his songs have hints of Will Oldham with a bit more of a country twang. One can't help but feel nostalgic when listening to his music, a sad drawl, delicate cracking vocals and sweet guitar melodies breath deep sighs of beauty.

@ The Whitechapel Art Gallery
£6/7pm

Most joint nights use the word vs. to represent their collaboration however this partnership is more like a warm embrace. Rothko's very own independent record label Trace Recordings join forces w/ Lithe presenting music which mines for that rich emotional vein in us all.

Rothko

Rothko returns to the Whitechapel Art Gallery after a 3 year absence. The presence of Rothko's music could not be felt better then in the intimate environment of the galleries café bar. One of the most epic pioneers in music of our time, the band has been in existence since spring of 1997 with various manifestations of the line up. Always staying a bit below the radar Rothko has maintained the true integrity of the word underground. Though underground this band is not when it comes to the amount of material they have released with a mammoth list of labels including Fierce Panda, Lo Recordings, Bella Union, Too Pure and Bip Hop as well as Mark Beazleys very own record label Trace Recordings just to name a few. Rothko has collaborated with artists such as Japanese ambient master Susumu Yokota and BLK w/BEAR [aka Washington DC based sound and visual artist Jim Adams]. Since 2004, the line up has been Mark Beazley, the founding member, along with Michael Donnelly and brothers Ben and Tom Page, also playing in Rocketnumbernine. In the last year they've played festivals and toured in the UK, France and Belgium recently supported the Sea and Cake in 2007 and opened for Murcof in December 2007.

"The music traces the outline around the expanse rather than fills it, so subtle" Jules Willis, BBC

"Gorgeous and mournful…haunting and emotionally charged…harkens back to vintage Brian Eno and Harold Budd." Sonomu

http://www.tracerecordings.com

The Slow Life

Former member of Rothko Crawford Blair plays Bass, Baritone Guitar, Ghost Guitar and FX in The Slow Life joined by Ben Jones, Daniel Baker and Darren Bancroft playing a rich mix of instrumentation. The Slow Life is an aptly named experiment in distilling the maximum amount of beauty from this slew of instruments. You can hear influences drawn from bands such as Low, Rufus Wainwright, Mew or even Swans.
Melodramatic vocals waver over gentle guitars and bold bass lines creating a contrast of sound that seeps out a dark atmosphere.

"The Slow Life take the familiar instruments of guitar bands and set off to paint on bigger canvases with brush strokes delicate and bold." qpitch

http://www.myspace.com/theslowlife

Will Plowman

'Will' has been creating ambient/experimental/elaectronica for around six years. In which time he spent a month in India recording soundscapes and later composing with this material. This in turn triggered a love for the use of environmental sounds within musical composition, which now plays a key part within his own work. His work also includes the manipulation of live instruments such as bass, guitar and piano with the use of different technologies to develop his unique sound.

Rothko + Ladywoodsman + Sons of Noel and Adrian

[ text about: http://sonomu.net/event/~nozcon/ ]

Rothko will go down as one of the epic pioneers in music of our time. The band has been in existence since spring of 1997 with various manifestations of the line up. Always staying a bit below the radar Rothko has maintained the true integrity of the word underground. Though underground this band is not when it comes to the amount of material they have released with a mammoth list of labels including Fierce Panda, Lo Recordings, Bella Union, Too Pure and Bip Hop as well as Mark Beazley very own record label Trace Recordings just to name a few. "Gorgeous and mournful…haunting and emotionally charged…harkens back to vintage Brian Eno and Harold Budd." Sonomu

http://www.tracerecordings.com

The Sons of Noel and Adrian are notable for having former Hope of the States violinist Mike Siddell in the band, along with member of a lesser known local band Shoreline. Their acoustic instruments – or "a stage full of wood" spill off the stage, violins, guitars, charangos, cellos, flutes, accordions, drums, whistles, cornets, and a banjo creating quite a large dark folk sound.

"Everything is dysfunctional, everything is repeated and it gets continually darker and darker, more and more repeated. It's like metal folk," James (Shoreline).

Rocketnumbernine + Matt Calvert + One Little Plane

[ text about: http://sonomu.net/event/~dlwfjh/ ]

Lithe Presents:
Rocketnumbernine + Matt Calvert + One Little Plane
The MacBeth, Nov. 27th
70 Hoxton Street, Shoreditch
8pm - £5
http://www.myspace.com/litherecordings

ROCKETNUMBERNINE
Rocketnumbernine are a London based duo of improvised drums and synths. Formed by brothers Ben and Tom Page in early 2005 their live shows have proved to be powerful and unpredictable. Once described as a cross between The Stooges and Sun Ra, the brothers are also members of sonic heavy weights ROTHKO, deliver a fusion of driving, freewheeling drums paired with mutilated electronics and pulsing basses. Between them they have played with Delicate Awol, Damo Suzuki, Roger Eno and Peter Bjorn and John and have recently supported the long anticipated Fridge come back gig at Bardens Boudoir.

"So what if you weren't alive to see Can play Munich in '68? Watching Rocketnumbernine perform is the next best thing." - by Do The Du
http://www.myspace.com/rocketnumbernine

MATT CALVERT
Matt Calvert's complex combinations of synth and guitar and the melodic layering of tones are reminiscent of Tortoise. However his music has a metal edge at times progressing and swelling into almost head banging moments. The music builds into a frenzy of drums and heavy guitar adding a youthful edge to the sound and an appropriate riotous contrast to the jazz driven cord changes and delicate layering of electronics.
http://www.myspace.com/mattcalvert

ONE LITTLE PLANE
Take the sounds of a rain stick, a clava, two finger picking guitars, chimes and a soft child like voice comparable to Joanna Newsom and be sent off into the musical daydream of One Little Plane. You may have heard her sweet vocals harmonizing with Adem and Luke Lalonde on Kieran Hebdens (Four Tet) remix of Caribou's Melody Day. Often Kieran accompanies Kathryn (One Little Plan) at live performances playing the guitar. The music has the feeling of woodland folk, rituals, storytelling and clover fields making it a truly unique and resonant vocal experience.
