press release - Blue Ramen
Low Res has pulled off the impossible (again)- capturing the vibrance and immediacy of improvisationally-composed music as played by an amazing ensemble - but without the benefit of players, instruments, or microphones.
Low Res imagined an ensemble, perhaps a time and place, and most certainly a music. Then, in an unprecedented achievement, he rendered all of this within the walls of a common electronic music studio. Unbound to reality, this imagined ensemble accelerates and tumbles into unknown realms of post-human music-making, and in the process stakes a claim as the best (ok, the only) non-existent composerís orchestra working in 2002!
In terms of mood, Blue Ramen ranges from the exuberant Heliotropic 5, Baila Mami and Blue Ramen #2, to the low key and bluesey Chalky, the cinematic Shaftasia, the raging Flatley ëEí, and the bemusedly-tragic Veneer, with colorful stops along each step of this nine track journey. Stylistically, we hear echoes of jazz, ëblaxploitationí soundtracks, nuyorican salsa, bawdy stripper music, free jazz, and lots of bits which can best be described simply as Low Res moments.
When asked what heíd like to do next, Low Res tells us that he is hoping to assemble an actual group to reinterpret the music on Blue Ramen, as well as some of his previous work and future compositions. Judging from the complex and often abstract nature of many Low Res songs, this would seem to be a nearly impossible task, but that would certainly be consistent with the challenges this artist has set for himself so far. Low Res has done several experimental performances in Los Angeles over the past 2 years with a mini-group, and judging from what weíve seen and heard, we very much look forward to witnessing the full rendition! Another upcoming project is a series of one hundred (!) 7 inch 45 RPM releases he plans to issue with the ultimate intention of filling an entire jukebox: http://www.aim-records.com/jukebox/index.html
