TARWATER. DWELLERS ON THE THRESHOLD. "this is where europe ends," he says "here is the border of europe." the fourth album of TARWATER on KITTY-YO begins with these words of the norwegian performance artist TONE AVENSTROUP. apparently, in a disco in no man's land between two continents, these words are spoken. TARWATER hardly can be classified. strangely graceful, this is how their sound patterns change between traditional instruments and modern electronica, between songs and tracks. they use their material unpretentiously and with economy. DWELLERS ON THE THRESHOLD refers to the demarcation line between song writing and track modelling which is characteristic for TARWATER. A demarcation line many popular culture critics argue about. the medium is the message; and with TARWATER, the medium is quite often an atmosphere film tracks usually create.in the past year, during the recordings in their own studio in berlin/mitte, a slowly growing archive of songs was being created. DWELLERS ON THE THRESHOLD is the result. during this time, TARWATER worked together with other artists such as the above mentioned TONE AVENSTROUP, NICHOLAS ADDO-NETTEY (part of the legendary 70ies occupation of the FELA-KUTI BAND) and STEFAN SCHNEIDER (MAPSTATION and TO ROCOCO ROT ). while working on their new tracks, TARWATER wrote music for films, theatre and auditions as well.In contrast to their former releases that made them popular in the states, UK and especially france, TARWATER prefer the short form on DWELLERS ON THE THRESHOLD. literally spoken, the album could be compared to a collection of short stories.
