press release - In a Different City

Bablicon originated in an unfinished book: a side character who befriends a futuristic musician. During the winter of '97, Blue Hawaii, Marta Tennae and The Diminisher began playing together in a loft in Chicago, attempting to assemble a power trio without guitar. Immediately! An improvisational approach developed, which continues to be the basis of the group's sound.

'In A Different City' manages to represent each of the member's individual musical styles, ranging from orchestra and chamber pieces to casio beat driven bluegrass ragas and Ornette Coleman style free jazz. Marta Tennae plays drums, hates tuna, and loves the colour red. Blue Hawaii sang in the Chicago Children's Choir as a tender youngin', played upright bass in college and now wraps patch cords for a living. The Diminisher has been playing saxophone since he was eight but abandoned his beloved Be-Bop when he fell under the subversive spell of Messian and Webern. Their live show departs only slightly from the blueprint laid out by their album, placing more emphasis on collective improvisation within the confines of already existing tunes and painfully high decibel levels.

"A wonderfully deranged slab of free flowing carnival space-jazz. Sporadic vocals, samples, and marching bands waft in and out of the mix, creating a scattershot feel that somehow works like a charm." [Splendidezine]

“When they pick up speed with their deliriously satisfying webs of bass/sax hypnotics, they start to approximate the metallic backbone that Beefheart never had” [The Wire]
