press release - Pardon My French
CINELUX
Originally from Rennes [FR] and part of the French collective Magnetic, CINELUX are LAUPHI [drums], STUNTMAN5 [programming, sampling, bass and voice] and TORDEONDE [guitar].
Back in 1999, STUNTMAN5 and TORDEONDE decide to start a project together by mixing programming, guitar and sampling for one single concert. The project gets quickly serious and they ask LAUPHI to join them to input his drums expertise.
CINELUX therefore is the meeting of three strong musical entities. Their metronomic rock [mainly instrumental] is recommended for fans of Can, Fridge, Hood, Kreidler and DJ Shadow... They use live instruments (guitar, bass, drums) sequenced methodically on beats, samples and loops. CINELUX is one of the few bands lately to have been able to mix with subtlety abstract hip-hop, electronica, kraut-rock and jazz.
The 5 tracks on this first release for CINELUX have been recorded during two different sessions between Rennes and Nantes at a time when the three members were all living in these two cities. Nowadays the band members are living in Paris, Poitiers and Rennes.
CINELUX has already played with To Rococo Rot, Four Tet, Third Eye Foundation… VUPOURVOUS is responsible for the onstage videos (super 8 / 16 / 35 / slides…), which are projected on a transparent screen behind which CINELUX is playing.
This is the first record from the new PARDON MY FRENCH series published by [peter, i’m flying] (Margo, Monogram, Playdoh…). This series aims at introducing new French artists. It also intends to push the boundaries of their music through remixes by a collection of international artists.
This first volume sees the participation of Capitol K (UK | XL recordings), Mitchell Akiyama (CA | Intr_Version, Raster-Noton), Machine Drum (USA | Merck), Tepr (F | 1/2 d’Abstrackt Keal Agram | Gooom), Tlone (F | Musik Experience) and Jean de Bristol (F).
From the punk-funk/euro-trash remix by Capitol K, the post-industrial techno track by Jean de Bristol, the down tempo production of Machine Drum (surprising actually when listening to his more hip hop background) to the more abstract electronica of Mitchell Akiyama, the remixes are a perfect complement and a beautiful homage to CINELUX’s music… an exciting record full of amazing tracks.
The cover paintings of the PARDON MY FRENCH series are provided by E*Rock from Audiodregs recordings.
