press release - Remix Series #1: Japan

HIM has come a long way since it's one man beginnings. Originally an outlet for Doug Scharin's 4 track dub excursions, HIM has evolved into a full-time concern for Doug, and grown into a continually changing band that embodies the spirit of collaboration. Previous HIM records have featured appearances by musicians from the likes of Rex, Codeine, June of 44, Royal Trux, Directions In Music, Tortoise and Isotope 217. Showing little regard for generic boundaries, they have taken in a range of styles including afrobeat, dub, jazz, rock, post-rock/electronics and funk. Rhythm and experimentation are always the common denominators.

'Remix Series #1: Japan' is the first in a series of three 12"s set to push the boundaries even further, with mixes by Nobukazu Takemura, Susumu Yokota, and Ultra Living. Takemura has assembled an intricate 3 part epic out of 'Verdict Of Science' (from the 'Sworn Eyes' album), Susumu Yokota delivers an undeniably house remake of 'Out Here' (from 'New Features'), while Ultra Living experiment with the tones and atmospherics of 'Sea Level' (again, from 'New Features').

'#1:Japan' will be followed by USA and UK remix excursions with mixes to come from the likes of Bundy K Brown, Mice Parade and Grain, the next instalment due early 2003. The artwork is based on a traditional Japanese tattoo design, only made complete by all three records together.

Doug Scharin is currently remixing tracks recorded for a new HIM LP with Bundy K Brown at Electrical Audio earlier this year. Tentatively scheduled for a summer 2003 release, the album will be supported by a full European tour.
