press release - sync or swing

living in ypsilanti, 30 miles from detroit, hans and rebecca anderson are the two cascading spirals around which the double helix sound is formed. the richly diverse music of the metro detroit area provided fertile ground for their initial experiments. both had classical training, rebecca as an opera singer and hans as a cellist, however when they first met in 1996, she was throwing down as an r&b/funk vocalist and he was an acid jazz/house dj… an odd but ideal match. inspired by their friends spesimen, dykehouse, recloose, ibex, bill van loo, audiomatrix, and elijah "double portion" lewis, they soon crafted a production style based on house, dub, and gospel music.

double helix made its live debut at the 2000 detroit electronic music festival. after playing a limited number of performances over the next year in the detroit/ann arbor area, the relaxed space dub of "lowkey" was included on planet e's "all access" cd compilation in 2001. the 3-track 12-inch "funxtiles" ep was released in may 2002 on rush hour recordings, establishing the instrumental fabric for their future productions. the promotional "1200 sec micro" mini-cd on ypsilanti united was released in july 2002 and revealed the vocal sound that would shape its identity. "sync or swing" is a fuller realisation of this progression.
