press release - The Magic Lantern

George is the name of the music made by Michael Varty and Suzy Mangion. The Magic Lantern is their first album. Theirs is a strange kind of music: odd without flagrantness, more a result of old props and sleight-of-hand than special effects and attention-seeking. It's the kind of music made by peole who've been friends since school, and still use the same pre-teen electronics and percussion trolley to make old-fashioned adult music.

Mangion and Varty share all instrumentation and writing duties, building a cabinet of curiosities from many voices, guitars and basses, drums and looping, wurlitzer organ, drones, bells and chimes, birds and strings, keyboards and chairs.

George have previously released two 7" EPs: 'The Summer of Stars' on Earworm, and the acclaimed 'As House' on Bad Jazz (Record Collector single-of-the-month). Suzy also lent her vocals to the recent Piano Magic album on 4AD, contributing two tracks that have been described as the albums highlights.

"George's latest EP is packed full to the brim with beautiful compositions, all hauntingly performed, while still maintaining the innocence of home recordings. These songs are a true expression of emotion. 'All we ever wanted to do was to be beautiful', says the press release - well, based on the music on this EP, they've succeeded" [Record Collector]
