press release - The Other Side Project Volume One

russ gabriel's musical endeavours began in 1990 in his home village of liss, in the south of england. ignited by the experimental electronic music shows of colins faver and dale on london's kiss fm, russ's initial works were hard to pigeonhole, drawing influence from a mix of the funk of the seventies, the electro of the early eighties and the new techno sounds he was hearing from eindhoven and detroit. in 1993 russ founded the ferox label which introduced a range of artists including cristian vogel, john tejada and ian o'brien. his own music edged more towards the dancefloor with his too funk and fusion projects and a wealth of releases on labels such as gpr, djax-up-beats, soma, peacefrog and carl craig's planet e.

by the end of the 1990s, russ's direction was firmly fixed on his fusion of organic funk and electronics. his continued quest for a new sound and his refusal to release anything less than quality has set him aside from most. today, russ continues to push for change in his music, from the samba rhythms of jelba, released in 2002 on sony's rhythmix label, to his much acclaimed into the unknown album on out of the loop, with increased use of percussion, strings and live instrumentation.

the other side project is russ's first album for emoticon - and the first artist album for the label. intended to showcase some of his more electronic productions - from heavy broken beat workouts to more jazzy affairs, with a respectful nod to old-school detroit techno - the album is a diverse affair and will appeal to open-minded music lovers everywhere. as a bonus for those who missed russ's previous 12" on emoticon, flip down to break, these three tracks are included on the cd version. the album release will also be preceded by a limited sampler 12", featuring masonette alongside a remix of aldeburgh by yotoko, aka domu and dave farlam. masonette has already been aired by gilles peterson and benji b on bbc radio one and 1xtra, and yotoko's mix of aldeburgh is sure to rock many a dancefloor this winter.
