text

Low Res has been around a while. The Californian experimental music scene star, better known for his electronic endeavors, shows us an initially perplexing hybrid of conventional lounge and all but conventional avant-garde. Pile it under 'avant-jazz' if you like, but it lacks the stereotype of the genre. It is erratic, but not in any conventionally known way, not to me at least. Still avant-jazz might be a better term than free jazz, because free it's not. It's so soaked in the cliches of lounge, easy listening, muzak, and the hammond organs don't make it any less obvious. This is quality music - especially if you are a fan of the styles abovementioned. Considering the predictability of the generic territory covered, it's a wild walk we are directed to, but a thoroughly amiable one. I'm not a particular fan of jazz myself, but 'Blue Ramen' does it for me - it's sufficiently weird to give you that extra click and highly listenable besides. Lounging might well not go any better than this, so you'd better check it out.
