More Fushitsusha! A man could bankrupt himself trying to keep up with Keiji Haino's output at the moment. Hot on the heels of the Tockuma release a Little Longer thus comes Withdrawe, this sable Disclosure ere devot'd (Keiji's titles have always been on the extravagant side; he's now apparently acquired a taste for mediaeval English, not necessarily a surprise for those attuned to the Mediaevalism at the heart of much of the man's music... ) Withdrawe captures the group live at the 14th Festival International De Musique Actuelle de Vicoriaville, in May 1997. For those who haven't checked the group out yet (and you can do so, in brief, with several other motion reviews) Fushitsusha are almost certainly the heaviest power trio in the world: guitarist Keiji Haino, bassist Yasushi Ozawa and drummer Ikuro Takahashi. And Withdrawe is them at their heaviest. If A Little Longer Thus concentrated on what might almost be called songs, Withdrawe is a series of ferocious improvisations, with the rhythm section at its absolutely most free (imagine Baker 'n' Bruce without any imperative to keep time) and Keiji playing (and yelling) for his life. This is as much an exorcism as it is a performance, and almost as exhausting to listen to closely as it probably was to play. But what fun!
