Verschiedene

a review by gil gershman of
release format Verschiedene by Institut Fuer Feinmotorik (CD Album)

text

"Verschiedene" translates as "different." This eclectic remix effort is certainly that. Cologne's obscure Institut Fuer Feinmotorik created a minor stir with several LPs of ultra-minimalist Brinkman-esque grooves, often created through unconventional mechanical manipulations of turntables. To set the stage for Verschiedene, I.F.F. sent CDs hand-inscribed with individual, playable lock-grooves to a delegation of German, Austrian, French, and Swiss sound-artists, encouraging each to use the raw lock-groove material as source matter for original "remixes." The arbitrary line between digital and analog sound has been confused before. But I.F.F. have staged the coup de grāce here, designing a CD to be played on a turntable! Verschiedene features the expected Powerbook treatments in grainy, glitch-infested contributions from Farmers Manual, Teleform, and Marcus Maeder. Just think about it: the sound of a skipping CD extracted from a spinning "record" with a little computer assistance? Brilliant! Sudden Infant's gurgle-effected loops don't give away their mysterious processing histories or sonic genetics quite so easily. Neither do the curving iterations of CD-Slopper (Mego's Hecker working with Farmers Manual) or the subtle, onomatopoeic scuffings of Anja Theissmann and Klaus Sander's "Nutzstich" ("utility stitch"). Equally impressive and irreducible are Shave Ass' rubbery revolutions and melodic mutterings and the tidal textures of Batchas' ambient exposition. But none of these noodle-scratchers can even compare with "Froh Zu Sein Bedarf Es Wenich," credited to a new Brinkmann(/Reise) project, Herkules Dreigangduo, wherein twin loops of German singsong twine beneath an exceedingly odd ping pong pulse pattern. Only the mighty Pomassl disappoints. His "Compression" is Verschiedene's one clunker, a (deliberately?) grueling, utterly funkless, hermetic 4/4 thud. In the interest of I.F.F.'s continued research, these Verschiedene CDs feature their own hand-inscribed, playable lock-grooves. You're invited to join in the fun. See you on Vol. 2?
