Sine

Sine

a review by Stephen Fruitman of
release format Sine by Radboud Mens (CD Album)

text

The latest release in Staalplaat's "material" series, Sine begins tentatively and maybe not all that imaginatively. But as it finds its own, barely perceptible momentum, it cannot fail to engage partisans of the clicks'n'cuts aesthetic. The sounds are culled from that coldest of sources, digital data, but Radboud Mens succeeds in instilling them with warmth. The mind readily finds comparisons with the near-silence of Francisco Lopez and Bernhard Guenter, but by the third track of this thirty-minute CD, an affinity with the minimalistic looping dub of Pole and Chain Reaction makes itself known, albeit in ultra-minimalistic mode. An album that rewards close attention. Packed in a clear jewel box whose hinges are put to the test by the heavy perforated metal inserts it houses.

is digital data really a 'cold' source? it comes from an entirely human environment, after all.
