Thanatopsis

a review by Stephen Fruitman of
release format Thanatopsis by Buckethead (CD Album)

text

"I have been producing Buckethead records for the last few years," says Travis Dickerson. "We just thought it would be fun to start a band that was a blend of both our inputs." Fun in spades.

'Thanatopsis' combines the talents of Dickerson (keyboards and production) and drummer Ramy Antoun with the dizzying velocity of Buckethead's patented flailings. A terrific all-out jam, plenty musical rather than sheer headbangery. The fingers fly, the drummer is intelligent and tactful, and Dickerson's keys, synths and samples interplay seamlessly with Buckethead.

A couple of numbers, including 'Pyrrhic Victory', get downright funky, while a smile-inducing loop constructed out of light strings on 'Final Reparation' provides the leitmotif for an equally-lighthearted romp. The echoing guitar infinities of 'A Thanatopsis' close the session with aplomb.

While this record may not break any new musical ground, it is an entertaining power trio frolic. Posted by Stephen Fruitman at 14:18, 01 Aug 2001
