Full Contact

a review by Lawrence English of
release format Full Contact by Dry & Heavy (CD Album)

text

Dub is an art and if you ever needed proof of that, then the production on Dry & Heavy's Full Contact is a perfect example of what you need to hear. It's a rich album that utlises the core elements of dub production to create an disc that can quite honestly sit proudly along side some of the work of traditional dub producers such as Lee Perry, Scientist and King Tubby.

On Full Contact Dry & Heavy (one member, drummer Shigemoto Nanao, also plays with Audio Active) achieve orbit gracefully around the dub planet and then sink deep into its warm and welcoming sonic atmosphere. Creating many of their songs around a simple yet devastatingly effective drum and bass progressions, Dry And Heavy's addition of choice horns, vocal lines and analog delays transform their songs from straight forward grooves into other-worldly sessions of head nodding bliss. It's rare and somewhat reassuring to find an album with such an attention to detail. Seriously one of the stand out dub releases of this year!
