On The Blink EP

Despite being two just-out-of-Uni boys, Noel and Tom of Wauvenfold produced some very intriguing and electrifiying electronic noise for the quirky Wichita label with their debut, the 'Crisp Little Digit' ep.

Their second attempt proves it wasn't a fluke the first time around. In fact, their second EP 'On The Blink' not only matches the quality of their debut, but goes beyond it.

'Stab' is a slice of minimal electro syncopation which could be likened to Aphex Twin's Windowlicker characters hitching a lift with Mr Oizo's Flat Eric of Flat Beat. 'Residual' starts off pared down and scrunchy, the melody is minimal and is reminiscent of Four Tet's work. The rhythm is all (including the noises of coins dropping and other subtle samples - a door here, an electrical glitch there). Again, the squelch of electro is played with until 'Residual' spirals itself out of the system.

Selenium, meanwhile is a beautiful flickery piece, with glittering high-pitched rolling arpeggios tickling the piston rhythms. There is never too much comfort in a Wauvenfold track, though. You think you know where it's headed when a sharp or jagged noise will intrude.

Finishing off this EP is the shy and reticent 'Foil Twitch' which is probably the most mellow and melancholy of the four tracks - there is little movement, just crackles, hums and buzzings...

All in all an intriguing package and one to whet the appetite for their forthcoming album, when it comes. Posted by susanna g at 14:18, 01 Aug 2001
