Dub Plate Style 1990-1999

a review by Stephen Fruitman of
release format Dub Plate Style 1990-1999 by Manasseh (BASSCD 008)

text

Smashing selection on yet another one of those wonderful French labels dedicated to spreading the worldwide gospel of True Dub. Nick "Manasseh" Raphael displays his dubplate '90s over twenty cuts of roots vocals and dub reconstruction, "showcas[ing] the history of the sound and its music".

Not solely by the book, as it were, but predominantly so: vocal and version, song or melody and then dub. Among the vocalists we find dependable veterans like Johnny Osbourne and Earl 16. Timeless and, while representative of the upswing of the UK roots revival in the decade, revealing Manasseh's particular style and joy in experimentation. Crafted for the dance floor but eminently suited for the living room or den.
