Dub Plates Vol. 3
a review by Stephen Fruitman ofrelease format Dub Plates Volume 3 by Twilight Circus Dub Sound System (MRecords CD 210)
text
What more can one say? How many superlatives can you heap on Ryan Moore's dub carnival before it becomes meaningless? Simply reiterated, Twilight Circus has been recording the most gritty, thumping, spine-loosening dub available for almost ten years now.
As usual, no samplers or programmers were injured in the making of this dub. Moore plays all the instruments live. 'Dub Plates Vol. 3' collects various "dub plates" or "specials" which have their origins as "one of a kind lacquer acetates or DAT tapes containing exclusive songs or mixes given by producers and music artists to select djs and sound systems". Every so often, Moore gathers up a fistful and releases them commercially for us mortals to enjoy, bless him. For if there resides a "true", original copy of the ideal dub track in some world of Platonic ideas, then it is on a Twilight Circus Dub Sound System album.
The entire Twilight Circus catalogue sounds "exactly alike", and each and every record is absolutely essential. Now while Twilight Circus should live long and prosper, the time feels ripe for Moore to test his mettle against other heavy dub hitters. Initiated sources say that a project with Bill Laswell and Eraldo Bernocchi is in the offing. Bolt down the furniture.
