text
Despite the fact that it has 5 tracks by 5 different artists, 'Floating foundation vol 2' is like a single repetitive structure that ends in a drone. The artists engaged are Disjecta, David Toop, Scanner, Hard Sleeper and Carl Michael von Hausswolff. The closer to the outer rim the more ambient the disk gets, so the last 2 tracks are little more than a continuous, floating, pulsating sound.
Disjecta (Mark Clifford) contributes with short guitar plucks and pulls on repeat, slowly building up a monotonous hack of a track. David Toop, famous music writer and mr ambient himself, has remained true to his 'name', yielding an almost classic example of the genre. Scanner (Robin Rimbaud) skillfully merges his growing ambient pulse with field recordings of various source. His is one of the darkest, more scraping and experimental of the tracks here. Hard Sleeper (Peter Maybury, designer and typograph) makes his debut, and a nice one too. As I mentioned earlier, drone gradually takes over in the second half of the CD. To that he's added crackling surface noises with occasional melody rudiments. Not much but works well - has influence on one particular listener here. Carl Michael von Hausswolff, (sound) art legend never told, produces a nauseating, pulsating bass drone - more a psychophysiological ordeal or installation than a proper track, summing up this electromagnetic field trip in an appropriate manner.
