Orphax, In a Long Night (self-released CDR)
text
After releasing a quantity of music in mp3 format, Amsterdam artist Orphax steps into more tangible territory, releasing his first CDR on a label with no name. And only thirty-two minutes and twenty-six seconds of it, at that.
In a Long Night is deep, dark drone music, as its track titles suggest - "In a Wider View It Looks Empty", "As the Winter Falls Over", "Lonlieness Has Taken Part", and so on. In a Long Night is ambient that once upon a time would certainly have been called "isolationism". In the spirit of Brian Eno, Orphax creates alien landscapes, imagined places we cannot possibly visit in any other way than aurally. And akin to Thomas Köner, the five piece on In a Long Night progress agonizingly slowly, sounds shifting subtly over extended periods of time.
Beautiful music over which to brood during long, frozen Arctic nights.
