The Catnap Remixed by Margo (pan006cd)

Haven't heard the original, but judging by the remixes it should be idm in the good old Morr Music fashion. Small wonder then that the majority of remixes fall into similar territory. It's a diverse bunch though, quite adequately presenting what the notion 'idm' is capable of containing. Schneider TM's bass-driven electro evocation follows ostensibly dancefloor-oriented idm (atmospheric techno?) of Broker/Dealer, sparse and melodic electronica (Prester, Margo remixing itself) alternates with hard-hitting, rocking electronics of Laudanum. The distinctive element of the record, obviously inherited from 'The Catnap' original, is the female vocals around which pretty much everything else here whirls. This in turn also reminds of Morr's Lali Puna or Ms. John Soda or something.

What Tomas Jirku has done in his remix is quite different from his usual 'icy dub' pattern. It's like a cross of progressive techno, Vangelis and something else I regrettably forgot.. in fact, Kraftwerk. Awkward and strange, out of place, not bad, perhaps interesting. And then it's all back to electronica time again, with ISO 68 (mild!), Styrofoam (echoey!), Teamforest (eclectic), Mils (erratic, glitch) and the eloquent Monogram. Wasteland's trip hop stance notwithstanding, the whole album gradually becomes indefinable as it progresses.

Can I just add the entirely personal and perhaps not-so-useful opinion that the Broker/Dealer track on this is excellent. I first heard it on the Traum records compilation "electronische musik - interkontinental 3" which contains other slick, stunning examples of the new microhouse style coming out of Cologne these days (Kompakt and Trapez labels etc.) You have to be able to deal with house though...
