Version Train

a review by Stephen Fruitman of
release format Version Train by Mapstation (feat, Ras Donovan) (staubgold 38)

text

An appendix to Mapstation's (Stefan Schneider of To Rococo Rot) glorious minimalistic glitch dub full-length 'A Way to Find the Day', which also featured the sweet melodious vocals of Ras Donovan - though on only two tracks that time. 'Version Train' includes both lovely new work and reworkings of two tracks from the previous release. The genius of this collaboration is the contrasting of Northern European cold technique with Caribbean warmth - a trend begun of course by Rhythm & Sound's work with Tikiman, but taken to another place, if not another level, by Mapstation.

Spicing up the line-up on this mini CD are drummer Martin Brandlmayr, and toaster Scallo adding a few words of wisdom to one of two versions of 'A Way to Find the Day's "Wake Up". Less is sometimes so much more: With very few elements - bass, sampler and minidiscs - Schneider crafts brilliant, dub-inspired sounds as Mapstation.

It is produced as clear as a little sparkling mountain river in the Alps. Brilliant ep!
